2 Samuel 5:4

KJV(i)4 David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years.

ISV(i)4 David began to reign when he was 30 years old, and he reigned 40 years.

My thoughts.

David was a yound lad when he was told he would be the next king, we have to wait for God's timing to come thru.

Here the Hebrew agrees with the LXX. I always compare the two because the author of 1st and 2nd Samuel sometimes exhibited a deficiency of arithmetic skills. The LXX is often more helpful.

Nevertheless, as one ascribing full sovereignty to God, I would agree with my brother Clark's conclusion. We must wait for God to fulfill His promises in His perfect timing. So it is with the covenants God made with Abraham and David. Those covenants have eschatological elements that must await the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in His Kingdom to have complete fulfillment.

Actually, I meant to say the Masoretic Text displays arithmetic issues in 1st and 2nd Samuel. These are well known. The LXX more accurately reflects the author's original calculations. I check the Masoretic against the LXX in every respect.
