WASHINGTON (AP) — Any day now, billions of cicadas with bulging red eyes will crawl out of the earth after 17 years underground and overrun the East Coast. The insects will arrive in such numbers that people from North Carolina to Connecticut will be outnumbered roughly 600-to-1. Maybe more. Scientists even have a horror-movie name for the infestation: Brood II. But as ominous as that sounds, the insects are harmless. They won't hurt you or other animals. At worst, they might damage a few saplings or young shrubs. Mostly they will blanket certain pockets of the region, though lots of people won't ever see them. Since 1996, this group of 1-inch bugs, in wingless nymph form, has been a few feet underground, sucking on tree roots and biding their time. They will emerge only when the ground temperature reaches precisely 64 degrees. After a few weeks up in the trees, they will die and their offspring will go underground, not to return until 2030. http://xfinity.comcast.net/articles/news-science/20130507/US-SCI--Cicada.Invasion/ |

Oh yeah! It's very cool. I always enjoy it especially since I will have to wait 17 years until the next hatch. I don't think I'll last. (Just being realistic.) |

we get cicadas here. It's cool but creepy, all those bulbous red eyes then all the "shells" all over EVERYTHING like some horrible bug version of invasion of the body snatchers LOL. *shiver* and they are SO noisy! |

Cicadas are great if you happen to raise chickens. When they come out the chickens gorge themselves on some real high quality protein while your feed bill goes down for a couple of weeks. |

We enjoy having them around here . . . I've never seen a massive hatch of them though. Wondering why we don't eat them? |

People do eat them! Not many people but some. I recall reading several years ago about some college student who, upon hearing that these are edible, caught a whole bunch and stir fried them. He said they were good! He also said that he ate too many of them and soon they came back up. :rofl Me? I don't think so unless I was starving. |

I remember the chicada. Very noisy that can be irrtaging . Everyone should wear ear plugs. They are not around here very much anymore , Iguess the DDT and other insectides killed them off. |

People complain about the noise. But to me it's the sound of summer. Of course we don't have hoards of them. |
