COLONIE, N.Y. — Authorities say a New York man who left his 1-year-old son in his car for eight hours in frigid weather only realized his mistake after a call from his wife.

Police in the Albany suburb of Colonie say the man forgot to drop off his son at day care and left the child strapped in the back seat of the car when he parked outside his office Thursday morning.

Officials say the man received a call from his wife at about 4 p.m. inquiring about their child. He called for an ambulance and the boy was checked out at a hospital and released.

It amazes me how people can forget a baby or a pet in a car.

Wish Martha Stewart was My Sister!
I totally do not understand - in any way, shape, or form - how someone forgets a child in the car!

DS was always buckled into a car seat in the seat behind me (SUV, or mini-van - so not the very back), but on the passenger side so I always had line of sight with him. Unless he was asleep, he was usually chattering & then talking and I was talking to him or we were "singing". My late-dh was the same way with him.

Besides that, there's no way he'd have stayed in that car seat if left alone for too long without someone coming back after he was big enough to walk! That child could be out of that car seat in a flash, if he chose to be. He could have let himself out of the car by the time he was 2, if left unattended.

Knowing how my own child was from the time he could walk, I don't understand how as many kids are left and die as do. I wonder "how cowed are those kids to start with?!?"

Parents who do this oughta be severely penalized if the kid survives, and boiled in oil if the kid dies!
