WASHINGTON — Congressional Democrats are reintroducing legislation to ban assault weapons but the measure faces long odds even after last month's mass school shooting in Newtown, Conn. The measure being unveiled Thursday is authored by Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, who wrote the original assault weapons ban. That law expired in 2004 when Congress refused to renew it under pressure from the National Rifle Association. http://xfinity.comcast.net/articles/news-national/20130124/US.Congress.Gun.Control/ |

The facets of the proposed controls are superficial. Mere aesthetics instead of effective controls. Extendable stocks? Pistol grips? Please. Smaller clip or magazines capacity, OK. Most deaths are from hand guns yet the new legislation ignores them. |

most of them have never read the constitution or completely ignore it. The 2nd ammendment is there to protect those who want to defend themselves from tyranny of the government. And considering what I'm seeing in our leadership lately- we are heading in that direction so fast it's scary. 2nd I doubt most of them would know the difference between an assault weapon and regular rifle. Feinstein was said to have told people to get the most "evil" looking guns to bring them to her little demonstration yesterday. btw the Newton killer used hand guns he did not use assault rifles. I read the report that a shotgun was in the car and he never used it. Also that he tried to buy a shotgun and was turned down. If true it sounds like the gun law there worked and that he had to kill his mother to get her guns. He couldn't buy one. Edited by Blessedx4, January 25, 2013, 7:33 am.

I dont know what the classification of assault weapons is, but in my mind i see them as automatic weapons with a high caliber. These should be banned in my mind. Semi automatic hunting rifles, shotguns, single fire weapons I dont see a problem with. Several years ago in Canada the government decided that all people with firearms must get them registered so big brother knew who had what. I STRONGLY disagree with that notion. I do however believe that everyone should take a course and have knowledge of what they are using. Criminals and the such should not be allowed. This post was not put forth as an argument. Just my 2 cents, and respect everyones opinion. north of the border, john |

Wish we had a thumbs up because I happen to agree with you. What these politicians never take into consideration is most gun owners ARE law abiding citizens. Most aren't members of the NRA so stop zeroing in on them, most of us out here would like to just want to live our lives free from Government overbearance on them and would be nice if we had a smaller government (as in costing us less to support so it would not be necessary to fine and tax us to death) Most Americans aren't radicals. I'm speaking for myself here though. I'm not even a gun owner but scary to think if I wanted to purchase one I would be treated practically like I was a criminal and must be in some database, fingerprinted etc. But criminals pay no attention to laws, no matter how well meaning. Criminals spend their time trying to figure out how to cheat the system and get away with things most of us never think about. Those intending to kill will kill. I'd like to see stricter laws on violent crimes period. Keep those who commit violent crimes the entire length of their sentence for instance. That'd be a good place start. All this is just my opinion also of course :) Edited by Blessedx4, January 25, 2013, 9:06 am.

From my perspective the way gun control is handled in the US it is not worthy of the name. Also makeing gun control synonymous with gun prohibition is in my view deliberately clouding an issue that needs addressing with emotional input to stifle debate. Gun control is a good thing. Here, after you register your aplpication you are interviewed by police, you are subject to a criminal records check as well as a medical/mental health check via your medical records. They inspect your storage arrangements to see that they meet approved standards (strength of case, locks etc.) that ammunition is stored seperately from the firearms etc. etc. Yes you will never be able to stop a determined person from getting hold of a weapon weven if you have a total ban but you can make it much more difficult for them |
