WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama will nominate former Republican Senator Chuck Hagel to be his defense secretary and an announcement could come on Monday, sources familiar with the nomination process said.

The choice will likely set up a confirmation battle in the Senate over whether the former Nebraska senator and Vietnam veteran is a strong enough supporter of key U.S. ally Israel and over his past calls for military cuts.

WASHINGTON — US President Barack Obama may round out his new national security leadership team next week, with a nomination for defense secretary expected and a pick to lead the CIA possible.

Former Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, said by a top House Democrat in a recent Newsmakers interview to have an "endemic hostility towards Israel," is the front-runner for the top Pentagon post. Acting CIA Director Michael Morell and Obama counterterrorism adviser John Brennan are leading contenders to head the spy agency.

During the hearings on Chuck Hagel's nomination to be secretary of defense, it's clear that the views of gay rights organizations will be heard. There the issue seems to be whether Hagel's apology for previous remarks and beliefs was sincere, or motivated solely by self-interest. He had years to apologize publicly, but did so only when opposition from gay rights groups threatened his nomination.

But in the case of allegations of anti-Semitism, Hagel has not even apologized. He has remained silent, though one can expect the usual "perhaps I didn't word that sentence as best I might have" excuse to emerge at his hearings. The question is, what might he have to apologize for? Why would anyone think he was an anti-Semite?

I would say he is a shoe-in based on his Israel position alone in the context of where we are (likely) on the E-T time line.

When one our perceived major threats to ME peace and stability wants you, then we need to re-evaluate the candidate's positions (attitudes) and beliefs. We do not need a finger-always-on-the-trigger sort of Sec Def but one who is from the Neville Chamberlain School of Endless Diplomacy may not be the right guy.

Heard a disconcerting news item today indicating Hagel may be a facilitator of an Obama thrust to rein-in our military capabilities. Hagel, as a Republican and decorated war veteran would be the face of the moves and serve to blunt GOP criticism.

The President is arguably a peace at all costs guy and de-fanging the US military is a way to preclude aggressive response to threats. Like debating and coddling sociopaths such as Iranian and Syrian leaders. I say it fits nicely into so many E-T Scriptures up to and including a one-world government eventually led by the AC.
