CHICAGO — A joke by the satirical website The Onion appears to have gotten lost in translation. An Iranian news agency picked up — as fact — a story from the paper about a supposed Gallup survey showing an overwhelming majority of rural white Americans would rather vote for Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad than President Barack Obama. But it was made up, like everything in the just-for-laughs newspaper, which is headquartered in Chicago. The Iranian version copied the original word-for-word, even including a made-up quote from a fictional West Virginia resident who says he'd rather go to a baseball game with Ahmadinejad because "he takes national defense seriously, and he'd never let some gay protesters tell him how to run his country like Obama does." http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/49226254/ns/us_news-weird_news/ :doh |

Well, when the Iranian President's term is up, he could come over here as a GLADD liaison with those in rural states where tolerance is a little low, so to speak. One trip into Logan or Wayne county in WV and he would not be seen or heard from again. Problem solved. |

Iran apologizes for citing Onion as fact An Iranian news agency issued a bizarre apology on Monday for citing a spoof story about President Barack Obama from satirical newspaper, The Onion, as fact. In a statement on its website on Monday, Fars acknowledged the error – but also listed a string of blunders by Western media outlets including the New York Times and the BBC. "All media, at least those you know like the BBC, CNN, etc., have had many goofs," the statement said. "Although it does not justify our mistake, we do believe that if a free opinion poll is conducted in the US, a majority of Americans would prefer anyone outside the US political system to President Barack Obama and American statesmen," it quoted its own un-named editor-in-chief as saying. http://worldnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/10/01/14168994-iran-apologizes-for-citing-onion-spoof-obama-poll-as-fact?lite#__utma=238145375.1768537089.1348593914.1349033967.1349190425.4&__utmb=238145375.1.10.1349190425&__utmc=238145375&__utmx=-&__utmz=238145375.1349190425.4.4.utmcsr=google|utmccn=(organic)|utmcmd=organic|utmctr=weird%20news&__utmv=238145375.|8=Earned%20By=msnbc%7Cus%20news%7Cweird%20news=1^12=Landing%20Content=Mixed=1^13=Landing%20Hostname=www.msnbc.msn.com=1^30=Visit%20Type%20to%20Content=Earned%20to%20Mixed=1&__utmk=27028862 |
