Prop making with expandable foam

I want to make a tree for a church event using spray expandable foam (Great Stuff) and was hoping someone here might have some experience with it asks could answer a few questions. Web info I've found had some conflicts.

First, I'd like to paint the foam but am aware spray and other paints besides latex will melt styro and other foams. Will it do the same to expandandable?

Also, will it NOT stock to wax paper? Or is there something else it won't stick to? I'd rather have a stand alone prop.

How well does it cut/sand when dry? I'm thinking I'll need to do some of that for appearance.

I've used Great Stuff successfully when used as intended, filling gaps in insulation, etc. I did try to use it as a casting material but did not succeed. It sticks to everything! I think you could paint it without problem because I haven't yet found a chemical that will dissolve it.

If you aren't pressed for time look into Reynold's Advanced materials web page. They carry almost every conceivable type of mold rubbers, resins, expandable foams, etc. for all uses including stage prop making. I bought stuff from them and have never been disappointed.

Cool, thanks!

Previously when I've used Great Stuff, I had the same experience as you....it sticks to everything.

Sounds like you've done some prop making....I do a lot of these types of projects for our church but am learning mostly by trial and error. Do you have some experience? I'd love to have an educated resource for questions!

No, I haven't done prop making. I'm into miniatures using either epoxy or urethane resins. You know, stuff like chessmen, etc. I tried the Great Stuff to see if it would expand fully in a mold and eliminate trapped air bubbles. It would be a great convenience too to find a product that would eliminate the measuring and mixing as well. The results were not good.

Look around the Reynold's site. They have a FAQ and a section for beginners that would be useful to you. It's ironic, I wouldn't have thought to recommend them to you if I hadn't received an email from them today that featured a new product specifically intended for making stage props! The Lord works in mysterious ways.
