Cambridge, MA Wants in on Controversial Soda Ban

Mayor Davis proposed the ban during a city council meeting on Monday night, saying she was inspired by Bloomberg's plan. “In addition to being an obesity threat, soda is one of the contributing factors to an increasing rate in diabetes and heart disease amongst younger people,” Davis explained. Other council members were hesitant to bring the soda ban to Cambridge, saying the city should fear the comedic wrath of Jon Stewart. Per the Boston Globe:

I used to live in Cambridge. There's a reason why the town is known colloquially, even among residents, as Peoples Republic of Cambridge. This time the City Manager (equal to a mayor in normal towns) has gone too far. There is no place in the city that is more than a mile from a neighboring town. Only the most ardent liberal do-gooders will abide by this. The normal people will vote with their feet. Somerville, to the north and Allston/Brighton and Brookline, to the south, have many fine restaurants that would love the Cambridge business.

edit to add: You notice the ban would include more than just tonic (pop or soda to you outsiders.) It also includes "sugar sweetened beverages" which, presumably, would include coffee and tea!

Ha! It's true what they said in that movie, "Stupid is as stupid does"

So what? The ban would be on "soda AND sugar sweetened beverages."

Why ban them at all?? People should make their own decisions on what to eat and drink and not have the city like NYC and Cambridge dictate what they should or should eat and drink.

I doubt it would include coffee or tea since you sweeten the product after you get it from the waitress and they could just not include sugar at the tables for this. I have never put sugar in my coffee or the tea I drink. They are talking about products that contain sugar already like soda. It is a real stupid thing to do since like another person said there are towns close by that will be glad to get new customers in there establishments and it will lower the taxes collected in Cambridge so it will be a loser too. The government can't control what people put in their mouths and if they try this country will have another prohibition folly on their hands. I can just see it now there will be speakeasy's all over the country catering to those that would like soda pop or other bottled sweet drinks.
