DOTHAN, Ala. -- A judge has sentenced a south Alabama man to 35 years in prison for stealing a meal from a Waffle House restaurant.

The Dothan Eaglereports that Houston County Judge Brad Mendheim sentenced 57-year-old Cornelius Newman of Dothan on Tuesday.

A prosecutor says police arrested Newman in November 2010 after he refused to pay for a meal at a Waffle House and pointed a shotgun at workers.

Seems a bit severe.

Somehow I suspect he got the 35 years for threatening with a gun but saying it was for not paying for a meal sounds more outrageous.

Quite possible, but even murderers and rapists frequently get less jail time than this.

If it concerns money in anyway you are guaranteed to get a bigger sentence than the murders and rapists.

Like the other poster said he probaly got the sentence for threating with a shotgun. Stealing a meal would probably have been a misdemor and the guy would have just paid a fine. It was the shotgun he took out that got him into more trouble.

Did he shoot anyone?

Even waving a gun around that is a bit over top.

I think it is a travesty of justice for this man to receive this type of a sentence unless he had a rap sheet a mile long or was already on probation for actually physically harming someone. We need a court system where sentencing is pretty much the same for the same types of crimes all over the country. 2nd degree murder seems to get someone a sentence of 20 yrs in some locations and then they get out in about 10 yrs or less doesn't seem right and 1st degree gets 25 to life in some areas in others areas it's life without parole which is what should be standard. It amazes me at some of the different punishments that are given and some of the plea bargains are not for the good of a community but good for clearing the dockets. I will never ever understand our court system and why it does what it does I hope this man appeals if this is really what happened to him.
