I have heard of 1,000 showing up for a couple of prime jobs. The problem is that the management tries to bully their employees. If you do not do this or that you may not have a job and jobs are hard to come by.It puts unwanted pressure on employees. |

That breaks down to about 23 people per job... umm, how is this a news story? It is not unusual for a job posting to garner over 300 - 500 applications for a single position, depending on how broad the position and widespread the posting. Being only 1 of 20 for a job posting would actually be pretty good odds. This is just typical news media doctoring numbers to make things appear worse than they are. :ohbrother |

"...The problem is that the management tries to bully their employees. If you do not do this or that you may not have a job and jobs are hard to come by. It puts unwanted pressure on employees." Certainly possible in specific instances but I do not think is a prevailing attitude or practice. The energy industry has had examples of what you imply, but those instances had severe repercussions to the individual managers and companies. |

Please keep my bil in your prayers. He lives in Atlanta and has a family. He's sent out dozens and dozens of applications for every kind of job imaginable and no one has called him back. I tried to convince him to come out and apply at Hyndai and Mercedes, but my sister doesn't want to move. Their daughters (twins) are in HS and very involved in various school activities (both are honor students) My sister is afraid to take them out and move them elsewhere. BIL could still commute- it would be tough - dh did that for awhile. He drove here while we still lived in Georgia. He'd stay with his mother during the week and come home on his off days. Yes,but if you make an issue of it "You are fired".Or they will make your job so miserable you want to leave.Without a good union to back a person up the management can do what they want. Edited by bopeep1909, June 1, 2012, 10:02 am.

I have a very different view of Unions. Regardless we need manufacturing to make a comeback here. I'd like to see us making more stuff here for a change. |

Ole shosty is right it is only 23 people per job that is normal odds. I also agree it is hard getting a job out there if you refuse to move to where there may be work for you. My son just retired from the navy out in San Diego where jobs are scarce in the private sector and so he had a head hunter get him interviews he got a job in Indiana he wanted and his daughter who will be a junior next year has to move in her high school years and his son who just graduated from High School will be attending UofC Irvine campus and be far from his parents now but you do what you have to do. That is a part of life and while it may not be ideal for them to move there should be no question that they should for the sake of family if the bread earner has found a job in another area. I am glad I retired a few years ago and don't have to worry about a job anymore I guess that is one of the few perks to getting older. |

Lord have mercy on all those who need work in Atlanta. Praying especially for Blessed's BIL and asking for provision for him and his family. Lord have mercy on those out of work and desparately looking for a job, In Jesus Name Amen. |
