Army reservist sues DC cops for allegedly vandalizing his home after calling a support help-line

In 2010 a depressed Iraqi War vet calls a support help line because he suffered nightmares and after hanging up goes to sleep. In the middle of the night he's woke up by knocking at the door. 16 days after being arrested he returns home to find his appartment trashed. His dog had been taken away from him. He has filed a lawsuit against Washington DC - there was no warrant to search his home. I'll be watching to see how this ultimately turns out. Sounds like more nightmares for the poor guy though. The help line he called was a suicide hotline - however he assured them while yes he had guns he wasn't suicidal.

Moral of the story may be - be careful what kind of hotline you call- SWAT may arrive at your door. Regardless it was overkill, surely there had to be another way of handling this

While Army Sgt. Matthew Corrigan was sound asleep inside his Northwest D.C. home, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) was preparing to launch a full-scale invasion of his home. SWAT and explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) teams spent four hours readying the assault on the English basement apartment in the middle of the snowstorm of the century.

The police arrested the veteran of the Iraq war and searched his house without a warrant, not to protect the public from a terrorist or stop a crime in progress, but to rouse a sleeping man the police thought might have an unregistered gun in his home.

(CN) - A depressed Army reservist who made a phone call for help says dozens of police responded by surrounding his home and arresting him, vandalizing and searching his place without a warrant, seizing his dog and killing his tropical fish.

Without going into detail, I can tell you from experience that calling for
help has more than once resulted in a total nightmare of unbelievable
proportions. This man , from what we can read in the report, did nothing
wrong. He did what most would say was a logical thing, having problems
he called for help. Did he get help? He got unwarranted trouble and heartache
to add to the problem he already had. They took his dog????? They killed his
fish????? They ransacked and vandalized his home????? It is completely
outrageous and unjustified. Think twice, then think again before you call
any kind of 'help'. You may be better off dealing with it yourself, with friends
or neighbors or church members. I hope he receives recompense for all they
put him through and all he lost. This kind of stuff really makes me angry! :yell

Me too and there is the danger that many others who may just need someone to talk to - may hesitate to call the helpline now after all this.

They definetly went overboard, why did they need to take his dog and trash his place? He deserves to be paid double for what he lost.

I hope he wins big maybe then the hot line will hire better listeners. There was no reason to do what the police did unless some over eager employee made it sound worse than it was. His life has now been thoroughly turned upside down. I hope in the future he talks to a counselor he knows or have a friend come over if he needs extra help getting through a night. What I gather from this is never call a hot line.
