Deep in the rainforest of south-east Cameroon, the voices of the men rang through the trees. "Where are the white people?" they shouted. The men, who begin to surround us, are poachers, who make their money from the illegal slaughter of gorillas and chimpanzees. They disperse but make it known that they are not keen for their activities to be reported; the trade they ply could not only wipe out critically endangered species but, scientists are now warning, could also create the next pandemic of a deadly virus in humans.

Ah, the media ... never let a week go by without a scare story for something that most likely will never happen...

So, ok ... I'm looking for the "rolleyes" emoticon... not sure I can work on this new board without it!

For now, I'll have to go with :ohbrother

didn't the first aids epidemic begin like this?

I have to say I have never bought into the Aids Quote Epidemic Unquote.

I'm sure it's touched many lives and don't mean to minimize it. I've just not met one single person with aids in the last 30+ years. I've not even been told so-and-so has aids. Not one.

But I do know at least 1 member of practically every family or neighbor I can think of, who's died from, has battled or is battling cancer.

btw I was reading yesterday that there was a rise in typhus cases. (Flea born) This year insects are really bad- I can't even sit outside for swarms of mosquitoes. My poor baby doggies are having horrible problems with fleas and ticks this year. It seems worse.

Poor doggies, Barb!!

I hate this:

Quote:

"They grieve just like humans," she says. "We have had them where they will just sit rocking, grinding their teeth and they don't respond to anything. You have to be able to win back their trust."

Ms Hogan says the apes can even die after the trauma. "They'll stop eating, they won't respond to anything... [They] decide whether they live or die. It's like watching a clock wind down."

Gorillas are absolutely amazing animals and live in families just like us. Ok, not just like us but they love their babies and their family members. I love/hate the movie Gorillas in the Mist, I love the first part where she is getting to know the gorillas and being accepted by them. I hate the second half where it deals with poachers killing these beautiful creatures. I would love to work with the abandoned baby gorillas that lost their families.

One hunter said a baby gorilla had screamed so much for its dead mother, killed for her meat, that he eventually killed it to stop the noise.

This breaks my heart. :cry
