Messianic Prophecies
I posted this in Apolo but I wanted to post it here too.
When man sinned he separated himself from God. God’s perfect, man isn’t. So for God and man to enter a relationship this bridge needed to be gapped. To do this God promised to send a sacrifice to atone for our sins. That sacrifice would restore the relationship – a Messiah. As time went on God, through the prophets, would give details as to who this Messiah was and what He would do. We call these revelations messianic prophecies.
When we consider what the Old Testament predicted, the New Testament records and cross reference that data with secular sources we have a compelling apologetic for the Christian faith. With Easter coming up we’ll go over the New Testament and secular sources several time, but for now let’s lay a foundation and focus on what the Old Testament predicted concerning the Messiah.
This is a pretty massive subject so I’m just listing a few high points to get started and give people not familiar with this a feel for the subject.
THE TIMEFRAME OF MESSIAH’S COMING WAS FORETOLD
Daniel 9:25-26:
Quote:
"Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the command to restore and build Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince, there shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublesome times.
"And after the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself; And the people of the prince who is to come Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary.
Now in these verses you have two areas where a timeframe is given:
1) Were told the Messiah would be “cut off, but not for Himself" at the end of 62 weeks. The 62 Week prophecy which is involved so I’ll take the lazy way out and give you a link...
http://www.khouse.org/articles/bible...960301-46.html2) If you don’t want to accept that we look to the second source. We’re told that He would be cut off before the city and sanctuary is destroyed. This occurred in 70AD
Then in a third place we find Jeremiah 23:5-6
Quote:
"Behold, the days are coming," says the LORD, That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; A King shall reign and prosper, And execute judgment and righteousness in the earth.
In His days Judah will be saved, And Israel will dwell safely; Now this is His name by which He will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS”
After the temple was destroyed in 70AD it became impossible to tell who was from which tribe because the genealogies were stored there. The Messiah had to come before 70AD because after that no one could prove what tribe they were from.
And in Malachi 3:1 I came across a fourth timeframe reference:
Quote:
"Behold, I send My messenger, and he will prepare the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to His temple. Even the Messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight. Behold, He is coming," says the LORD of hosts
This verse says that the messenger will visit His temple suddenly. Again this would have had to have happened before 70AD.
So when we read through these verses we find that the Messiah had to come before 70AD.
I’ll post on the Messiah being God next...

THE MESSIAH WOULD BE GOD HIMSELF
Isaiah 43:11:
Quote:
"I, even I, am the Lord, and apart from me there is no savior.
Not only this verse, but the entire Old Testament makes it very clear that God alone is the Savior.
Isaiah 48:12,16-17:
Quote:
"Listen to Me, O Jacob, and Israel, My called: I am He, I am the First, I am also the Last. Indeed My hand has laid the foundation of the earth, and My right hand has stretched out the heavens. When I call to them, They stand up together.
Come near to Me, hear this: I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; From the time that it was, I was there. And now the Lord GOD and His Spirit Have sent Me.
Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, The Holy One of Israel: "I am the LORD your God, Who teaches you to profit, Who leads you by the way you should go.”
These verses are an absolute goldmine of info. Let’s break down what they tell us.
1) The first verse clearly identifies the speaker as God
2) He tells us that God and the Holy Spirit have sent Him
3) He tells us that He, God, is the Redeemer and the Holy One of Israel
So we can conclude that the Messiah is God and He is a member the Trinity
Micah 5:2:
Quote:
“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of you shall come forth to Me the One to be Ruler in Israel, whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting.”
This verse says that the Messiah would be eternal.
Jeremiah 23:5-6:
We looked at this verse before in the context of a timeframe for the coming of Messiah. Let’s look at it again as it identifies who the King will be. His name is “The Lord Our Righteousness” and He executes judgment and righteousness in the earth. Two things God alone can do. “Surely He is God who judges in the earth." (Psalm 58:11)
Psalm 110:1:
Quote:
" The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at My right hand, till I make Your enemies Your footstool."
God has said there is no one like Him or beside Him – “there is no other God besides Me, A just God and a Savior; There is none besides Me.” (Isaiah 45:21) So who is this sitting at His right hand? The term “sit at my right hand” is a term of equality.
Malachi 3:1:
Quote:
"Behold, I send My messenger, and he will prepare the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to His temple, Even the Messenger of the covenant, In whom you delight. Behold, He is coming,"
Says the LORD of hosts
We’ll look at this verse again but this time we’ll see that this verse identifies the Messenger as “the Lord” who visits “His” temple. The Old Testament is certainly clear that only God is to be worshiped.
Hosea 5:15:
Quote:
"I will return again to My place till they acknowledge their offense. Then they will seek My face. In their affliction they will earnestly seek Me."
God’s place is heaven (“Heaven is His throne” the Psalm says). To return to His place He must have first left it.
Proverb 30:4:
Quote:
Who has ascended into heaven, or descended? Who has gathered the wind in His fists? Who has bound the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name, and what is His Son's name, If you know?
Here in the middle of the Old Testament we learn that God has a Son.
Next I post on how the Messiah would die for our sins, but I'll wait a while to give people a chance to respond.

this confuses me.
Like Joel said, during Jesus' time they were really looking more for a military leader to overthrow their enemies. The Messiah had two missions (we'll cover them soon):
1) Die for the sins of the world
2) Establish an everlasting kingdom
Everyone focused on #2 but forgot that #1 had to come first. If He had died during His everlasting kingdom it wouldn't be everlasting.
It's interesting that when you look at others who claimed to be Messiah you see a similar pattern:
A) They would gain a following
B) Lead a revolt
C) Get killed
D) The movement would then die
The one exception is Jesus. In His case He:
A) Gained a following
B) Taught grace and peace
C) Died
D) His movement exploded against impossible odds ( see 17 reasons why here
http://www.tektonics.org/nowayjose.html and is still growing today
Jesus is absolutely unique. What was different about Him? He rose from the dead and it convinced people He truly was the Son of God.
A great article on what the rabbis thought about the Messiah can be found here...
http://cjf.org/pages/wrabsbel.htmWhile I'm thinking of it...I have all my notes at home, but I think somewhere in the Talmud the rabbis were really upset once the temple was destroyed and the Messiah had not come. They said that the only way they would see Him now would be through repentance. Later on we'll see they weren't far off with that comment. It's really cool.

(i read this as you posted it in Apolo and had hoped you'd post it in another forum as well, i don't visit aplo too much, i lose my peace there if i ever try to be serious about a topic)
Yeah, I wanted to share this with Christians because I think it's really fantastic. I've really only started to study it. I posted it in Apolo originally expecting a debate but it doesn't look like anyone wants to go a couple of rounds :B:

Prophetic Fulfillment
1. Why is this Doctrine important?
God has promised that He would do nothing except He first reveals it to His servant the prophet:
Quote:
Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.
Amos 3:7
So then, if the LORD were to come to save man from his sin, He would have foretold prophets concerning this coming Redeemer. God does this so that anyone who has a desire may find the truth of the redemption made available through Jesus. God placed many prophecies there so that no man can truthfully and honestly deny who Jesus is. Jesus told Pharisees that the Scriptures would testify of Him (“Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me” – John 5:39), and if they do not then He is a liar and we are still in our sin.
Lastly, the tradition of Jesus prophetic fulfillment was taught to the first disciples by the LORD Himself to the disciples along the Road to Emmaus and later in the Upper Room:
Quote:
Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
Luke 24:25-27
And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, and said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to
suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And ye are witnesses of these things.
Luke 24:44-48
Therefore, it is necessary that Jesus be prophesied of and have fulfilled prophecy for Him to be who He claimed to be.
