A division of the American Library Association has voted to remove Laura Ingalls Wilder's name from a major children's book award over concerns with how the early to mid-20th century author portrayed blacks and Native Americans.

The Association for Library Service to Children's board made the unanimous decision Saturday at a meeting in New Orleans. The name has been changed to the Children's Literature Legacy Award.

The association says the work of Wilder — best known for her "Little House on the Prairie" novels — "includes expressions of stereotypical attitudes inconsistent with ALSC's core values."

More politically correct nonsense.

Based on some of the other news stories that I have seen on this topic, most of the recent outrage against these books seems to be over the portrayal of the Native American tribes that the Ingalls family interacted with in some of the books.

Granted, the books are not racially sensitive by today's standards, and they do occasionally resort to the sort of stereotypes that are all too common in "Cowboy and Indian" type stories, but they are realistically consistent with the majority views and attitudes of the time period in which the events portrayed are set.

Further, being Native American myself on my Mom's side, I do not personally find the books (which have been some of my favorites since childhood and one of very few book series that I have read multiple times) particularly offensive.

Yes, there are a few scenes in the books that could have been handled better, but I am far more offended by the trend in recent years to make every minor thing a political correctness issue.

No matter how much people try one can not sanitize the past. Nor should we. Rather, we should regard these past attitudes as teaching moments.
