Haven't heard much about Fat Tuesday, this year - it's today; or that Lent starts tomorrow (not that we keep Lent). Haven't even seen many ads on tv for any specials going on around town for Valentine's Day this year. :confused It just seems a little odd.

The start of Lent is kind of a big deal here due to the large Catholic population. Many are not happy about having to fast on Valentine's Day because it falls on Ash Wednesday this year and the Catholic powers that be are not giving a special dispensation to fast on a different day like they did last year when St Patrick's Day fell on a Friday during lent.

My sister's results for the ancestry DNA test bothered me so much I decided to have my own done. If mine comes back as no part Native American, like hers, I will be disappointed. If I am part native American I will suggest that she get a retest.

Scott hope your DNA result are better than what turned out for your sister.

People with the flu and are given prescription for Tamiflu are going to be paying $171 for 10 tablets. It has always mad me mad to hear about this with the makers of the drugs raise the price to make themselves more money. They have no shame anymore.

What is a fastnacht??? Is it a kind of donut???

So lovely to see the snow melting here and 30 days from spring.

It is a type of Pennsylvania Dutch confection very similar to a donut fried in lard. Traditionally, they were made on the day before Ash Wednesday before starting to fast for Lent.

Mel, I forgot all about it being fastnacht day until I watched your post. :thumb

Carmen, wiki has a pretty good page on the subject:

One popular recipe is the one that calls for mixing the dough with mashed potatoes, which gives the yeast raised fastnachts a flavor all its own, not be confused with commercial donuts.

Mel, have you ever had the mashed potato & yeast version? I'd like to try one of those sometime.

No donuts for us today, but to celebrate the fact that he FI-nally felt a little better today, Edward ordered us a late lunch from Chili's on the westside of town. He was home on the eastside, and I was at my desk in the office, having spent about 3 hours showing homes and talking various neighborhood market values with a couple of investors who drove up from Dallas. I was cold, tired, coughing a lot (still am), and hungry. I ran out & picked up our lunches - two big mouth sunrise burgers with an order of fries on each and a dark greens (so delicious!) house side with each. That was our Fat Tuesday celebration, without even meaning it to be so. :lol

I've been playing on my cousin Sherry's "LipSense Party" site on facebook, trying to win a tube of high dollar lipstick. :wink There are some great colors that I would actually wear (I am not a makeup diva, by far :hysterical ), and they're probably of good quality, but they are expensive. I can't justify the price. The games are fun to play, and maybe I'll help her win some hostess gifts.

Going to bed soon, tho' - have to be up and at 'em early again tomorrow. 'Nite, y'all! Stay warm and sleep tight.

No, not mashed potato as such, but I've had the ones that used potato flour dough, similar to what is used to make potato rolls and breads.

Around here, the few places that make true PA Dutch style Fashnachts rather than regular donuts typically have lines of people going out the door and extending for blocks in the morning on that day.

Some places even require them to be ordered days in advance because the demand is so great.

:hysterical That's too funny! Fasting is not eating fast food.

Happy Ash Wednesday! . . . and Happy Valentine's Day!

If I had the opportunity, I'd probably order some traditional fastnachts in advance, at least once, just to try them out. :nod

I'm still coughing something terrible. It's not 'quite' like bronchitis, but it sure is annoying. Will be so happy to get completely over this!

It was so foggy here this morning, you could hardly see down the street.

edited to add: The sun burst through the remaining fog at high noon! My day is improving! :thumb

So how are you all?!?

Battling with tenants this evening. :tape

Well, we're about through Valentine's Day, so I've started celebrating Chinese New Year. It starts on Friday, but, heh, close enough on Wednesday night. :heh I want to plan some good, homemade Chinese food for Friday or Saturday.

I'm happy to report that I have gotten through Valentine's Day for the second year in a row without any of my friends trying to "fix me up" with someone. I think that they (or at least most of them) are finally getting it that I really am content to remain single for the foreseeable future.

I was also glad to see that this year none of the local Churches that observe ash Wednesday were promoting the LGBT Glitter Ash that was so popular last year.

So sad the shooting in Parkland, Florida. :cry Prayers for the families of the victims and the school. :pray2

Someone actually told my sister it was the new norm. How so very sad for us that this is considered the new norm in general and it was no big deal. :sad Hearts are indeed being hardened. Hope we are out of this broken depraved world soon. :pray2
