You got it, Scott! I only read an article on her from the History Channel, but you're right - she was quite a gal.

Was described as "...the greatest of all time. Don't ever forget it." Additional clues in the picture.

He was the #1 entry on a list of Top 9 cyclists. I had not heard of him before, but then again, I know nothing about bike racing. :shrug I'll post the next person later today . . .

This gal was born in Ashtabula, OH and came from a line of creative inventors and builders. She married well and lived a socialite's life, but she wanted more convenience so she got busy working as a mechanic and developed a time-saving device that she thought every woman would want in her home.

She obtained a patent for it and won first place in its category at the World's Fair in Chicago in the late 1800s. Nonetheless, her device has only somewhat penetrated the market, to this day. It was nearly a century before more than 50% of American households included this device. Today it's found in approximately 75% of American households.

She patented a household appliance.

edited to add: I was shocked to find out this appliance only has a 75% implementation rate across the U.S. in 2014. :eek It's one of those devices I'd never had, any placed I'd lived, until I remodeled the house out in the mountains and had one installed in 1994. Now, I like the one we have - it's not the bottom of the line, but it's not very high tech either; seems more practical.

Thanks for the clue. I'd gotten hung up on how much our mystery man resembled Millard Fillmore, who was pretty obscure, as presidents go ... & I couldn't get past that.lol

Found him! Warren G .Harding -
Quote:

Warren G. Harding, the 29th U.S. president, was born on November 2, 1865, in Corsica (now Blooming Grove), Ohio. Harding's campaign for the presidency promised a "return to normalcy." He was elected president on his birthday and inaugurated in 1921, following World War I. After serving as president for less than three years, on August 2, 1923, Harding died unexpectedly of a heart attack while traveling in California.

I'd guessed from your clue that he must be a governor or president . . . and Ohio has had a handful of presidents who were rather obscure. (Some claim to fame, eh? :ohno ... :lol )

Will post someone in the morning - going to head to bed now. :wave

This photo became a piece of American history - an icon of the event that was occurring. Who's the gal in the middle of the scene?

Mary Ann Vecchio. The thing about iconic photos is that they are too easy to look up especially when you're as old as we are and remember when they happened.

Made a lot of money in the music industry. Neither sang nor played an instrument.
