He was a false prophet who founded a rather disturbing cult in the 1960's which is still around today though they have changed their group's name multiple times.

Yes, it is Dorothy Malone. She won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 1957 for her role in Written on the Wind, which starred Rock Hudson. The description of the movie in Wiki sounds like a real soap opera. Dorothy Malone also played in Peyton Place.
