Since the previous thread was nearing 900 posts, I decided to start a new one.

Yes.

I thought you might know her right off. I remember the protests over her selection. Had not read anything about her though until now.

By the way, saw a grocery store tabloid that proclaimed Kim Yo-jong to be the hottest woman around. I had to laugh.

Who says that women had no power in the USA? She changed the entire nation (ultimately for better or worse is debatable) before women had the vote in 1920.

I thought that's who she was - Carrie Nation.

Interesting trivia: when I was attending West Va University (fall of '75 - spring '79), there was a women's boarding house in town operated by the Women's Christian Temperance Union. They had a list of rules for residents posted on a metal plaque outside the entry. A required pledge of sobriety was one of the biggies. I knew they'd never let me inside. :heh

One thing I discovered when reading about Carrie Nation was her reaction to President McKinley's assassination. Suspecting that he was a closeted drinker, "He got what he deserved." What a loathsome thing to say. Of course, the self righteous do tend to be loathsome.

Carrie Nation certainly was not a nice person. :ohno

This next lady, quite likely, was far more charming. She began her career at the age of 14, tho' she was shunned by her family & her culture for working in the United States. She only lived to be 56, suffering from cirrhosis of the liver late in life. She achieved some important firsts in her career, which also contributed to her family's disapproval.

Too easy! Anna May Wong. Incredibly she couldn't land some roles playing a Chinese woman. Why? It was forbidden to show inter-racial kissing. If the script called for that the role would go to a white woman.

I'll have someone some time tomorrow.

Reading about her was fascinating. She was a beautiful woman, for sure.
