Poor Jay Scott!

Yes, my guy is Dick Goddard - much beloved meteorologist. His woolly bear festival is still quite a hit with people in Cleveland.

They were a fascinating bunch of gals! Really earned their place in history. I found this photo on a pinterest board, but there was no English text around it so I still haven't figured which gal she is. :lol

Second in command.

All of them looked as sweet as cotton candy during the day but were real Nazi killers at night.

edit to add: Oops! I don't know who this woman was. When I found this picture it was captioned with a name. It's the same name in several places. But (and there's always a "but" isn't there?) when I Google that name a different woman's picture comes up every time. What to do?

I have a sneaking suspicion she's one of two gals I found names in English for, so I'll check them out tonight. :):

Could she be The White Rose of Stalingrad, Lidiya Vladimirovna Litvyak?

And have you read A Dance with Death: Soviet Airwomen in World War II, by Anne Noggle? There are 2 or 3 chapters online and it's pretty interesting.

I don't think so. She looks only remotely similar to the picture I posted. Honestly, I think this is messed up. I thought she was Yevdokia Bershanskaya. I got that from this page https://www.google.com/search?q=Yevdokia+Bershanskaya&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8 The thing is, if you click on IMAGES (which I admit I did not do) a completely different woman shows up. It's your turn if you want to or I could go again and get it right this time. Your call.

I haven't seen the book you mention but I have read articles about the night witched. Hard core brave!

I saw several photos of Bershanskaya, and she didn't look like our gal. I also saw our gal named as Rufina Gasheva, but if you look at Rufina on Wikipedia, our gal looks nothing like her. Our gal bears the best resemblance to Rosa Shanina, but Rosa was one of the top snipers, she didn't fly as far as I could find out. All of these gals are very interesting.

Go again, Scotty ... that's only fair! :D:

I was there when, in 1964, this 19 year old rookie hit a home run on his very first pitch at Fenway Park. Soon after he would become one of the greatest tragedies in sports history. Still much beloved and fondly remembered 27 years after his untimely death.

Tony Conigliaro. . . . clue took me right to him. Man, that pitch that caught in the eye and cheekbone was awful! That's not what killed him, but it sure took a heavy toll.

True to baseball lore, Tony C. reportedly prayed, as he laid there after that ^^^ injury,
Quote:

“God, please, please don’t let me die right here in the dirt at home plate at Fenway Park.”

More Tony C. Look what I found! Hard to believe it was 53 years ago.

Yeh, he was quite the baseball player!

Our next guy is one of my all-time favorite athletes, and he's not even from Ohio, LOL.

He's seen here playing golf with President Trump in June. Why? Because as he once heard Arnold Palmer say, "If the President of the United States ever asks you to play golf, you do it." He apparently caught some amount of flak from loud mouths for accepting the invitation to play.

Joke's on me, eh? I started off searching for all kinds of stuff on Google without even looking at the face! This looks like Peyton Manning.

It is Peyton. He was the host of the Espy awards and I went looking on some info on him. Found this photo & the story that went with it so thought I'd give it a shot.
