Googled "Big rock in Oklahoma" that got me going in the right direction.
:hysterical Oh, I was pretty sure it would be apparent that it's probably in Oklahoma, but I had no idea this would be so easy!

Yes, it is the Heavener Runestone.

It's not nearly so big in this day and age. When my late-dh and I went to that state park a little over 30 years ago, a plexiglass enclosure had been built around it to preserve it. People had vandalized it over the years, adding graffiti and chiseling off pieces of it. Surely it's better protected now. There's some question as to what will happen to it if the state park actually closes, due to budget shortfalls.

The location was easy. Naming the woman was a bit more difficult. Once I got a probable name and googled that all kinds of info came up. It's a fascinating story, one I had never heard about before.

An author. I read at least one of his books when I was a teen, maybe more. A Sooner.

Is this Ralph Waldo Ellison? Never heard of him before, but he is on a list of OETA's titled "10 Black Authors Everyone Should Read"

:blush I wouldn't know Harlan Ellison either, except I just googled him real quick. Ok - know who I'm posting next so will do it when I get back from the nursing home, shortly.

This man was Russian, a poet and novelist. This Russian writer's major novel led the Soviet government to consider him less than a hardcore patriot. As his health was failing in the late 1950s, the KGB had guards stationed outside of his home for months. He was not permitted to send or receive mail.

And here's where the story takes a turn. Back in the United States, a young Okla University student asked the homecoming queen to a dance in March '59. Knowing she liked that Russian author's novel, the college student read the major novel 3x's so he'd be prepared to discuss it with the homecoming queen. She ultimately canceled out on their date. So, the college student spent the night in his room at college, penning a letter to the Russian novelist, presenting a one-sided discussion of the writer's major work.

Somehow, the letter got through to the Russian writer, and he answered the letter in English to the U.S. college student and managed to sneak it out into the mail. It is the only known letter this Russian ever wrote and sent to anyone in the United States. The letter provides the meaning of the novel, as told by the novelist. The contents of the letter have not been published since it was received in 1960, but the American has begun to let out excerpts of it. He is going to return it to Russia, to the museum of this author's work/life later this year, and the contents will then be revealed.

Hope all that ^^^ made sense - it was a fantastic "human interest" sort of story in today's local newspaper. The OU college student is a Lawton native, tho' has been in business in Texas for years. (Of course, when the letter arrived in the US, it was delivered to the college student by a couple of FBI agents & the local police, who had a lot of questions.)

Who is the Russian writer?

Model Carol Alt?

No, Cheryl Tiegs, isn't it? I'm not finding the photos I'm looking for, but I'm guessing.

Back to Pasternak for a minute ... the guy who wrote the letter was Lawton native Ronnie Jones. He is President of Transpo Funding Corp of Dallas these days & counts George W. Bush among his friends. He wrote the letter to Pasternak in March of 1959. It states in the article that Pasternak wrote to Ronnie Jones not long before his death in 1960.

The Soviets had forbidden the publication of Dr Zhivago so Pasternak had passed the book off to an Italian communist who took it to Milan, Italy & published it. The Soviet government was even angrier when the book won a Nobel Prize. :wink

The letter to Jones is supposed to contain "the only known explanation of the true meaning of his Nobel Prize-winning novel". Ronnie Jones is taking the letter to Russia and having made a permanent part of the Pasternak House Museum collection. Russian researchers have declared the letter authentic and "highly significant".

I'm really hoping the contents of the letter will be revealed and published so that I can find it and read it. I'm very intrigued, lol!
