A California city is offering a unique benefit for low-income residents: free marijuana. Starting next summer, Berkeley residents who earn less than $32,000 per year (or $46,000 per family) and have a prescription for medical marijuana will be able to get it for free from one of the dispensaries operating within the city. Under a law passed unanimously by the city council, dispensaries must set aside 2 percent of their pot for distribution to the poor. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/09/05/free-marijuana-berkeley_n_5770256.html?utm_hp_ref=weird-news :tape |

There are two ways to look at this. First is, "Heh, it's Berkley. What do you expect?" Second is if marijuana really is a useful drug with legitimate uses (works wonders on diabetic neuropathy, I can attest) then it is only right to give it to the poor for free or at a reduced rate. |

Okay, I'll say it - I'm in favor of legalizing marijuana nationwide, for everyone's use if they're over the age of 21 (just like alcohol use is legal). I don't drink, and I don't know if I'd smoke pot (were it legal), but I nonetheless support legalization. I don't have a problem with poor people who can benefit from the use of marijuana for a medical condition receiving it free. |

Yes, and not driving or operating any type of heavy equipment after using it. |

I'm not advocating legalizing pot with no provisions or laws . . . I think the same should apply for being under the influence of cannabis as applies for being under the influence of alcohol. |

Oh, I know. I was merely stating my feelings. Sorry, didn't mean to make it sound otherwise. |

The biggest problem that I have with this program is that human nature being what it is, we will likely see many less than honest people faking medical conditions in order to score free drugs, while many truly ill individuals who would benefit from the program will be shut out by bureaucratic red tape.

I'd be willing to bet you're hitting the nail on the head, Mel! Trudy, no need to apologize, you made me think that I needed to add what I did because a lot of times in general, in these "to legalize or not to legalize" debates, people (not you) seem to forget that there would have to be the same restrictions and laws as there are with drinking. Years back, a guy who was raging against the legalization of drugs got in my face and demanded to know if I'd want my dentist to be high while working on my teeth, or how about the pilot flying the plane I was on?!? I shot back with, "No, and I would want them to be drunk either!" :lol . . . . he got the point. |

I hear that. I read somewhere about someone asking,"If it's legal what about employers who don't want employees using on the job?" The answer is simple. Employers make the rules. The same way that they can prohibit drinking they can prohibit use of medical marijuana. Putting it bluntly, you still have to pee in the cup once in awhile. |
